Subliminal affirmations are positive messages “placed behind” music or played at an auditory frequency that bypasses conscious recognition and penetrates the subconscious mind. This can be done in many ways but to keep it simple, subliminal affirmations are positive affirmations such as “I am lovable” or “I am healthy” that are layered below music at a sound level that can not be easily heard.
The purpose of subliminal affirmations is to help us reprogram our subconscious minds by bypassing conscious understanding, thus bypassing conscious resistance.
“Reprogram our subconscious minds” is such a vague statement, so let me break it down.
Our conscious minds are our awareness while our subconscious minds are our habits and beliefs. The subconscious mind influences our behavior by ensuring it is in alignment with patterns that are consistent with our past assumptions and actions. Its main objective is to keep us safe by ensuring we remain in our comfort zone. “Your subconscious mind causes you to feel emotionally and physically uncomfortable whenever you attempt to do anything new or different” (Tracy). It does this not only when we physically take actions outside of our comfort zones, but also when we think thoughts that are inharmonious with our typical patterns. That’s the reason why you may feel awkward or like you’re lying to yourself whenever you recite affirmations. Saying things like “I am lovable” or “I have a high self esteem” will be met with resistance if you’ve habitually accepted the assumption that you are not worthy of love and that you have a low self-worth. Those uplifting phrases go against EVERYTHING you’ve accepted as your truth.
How Subliminal Affirmations Work
Throughout his book Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon, Dr. Joe Dispenza goes into great detail on a topic called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to form synaptic connections and facilitate change. Dr. Dispenza highlights this phenomena through in-depth studies and experiments done in his workshops where meditation is the catalyst towards rewiring neural connections and sculpting neural pathways. While listening to subliminal affirmations you have the unique opportunity to enter a meditative state that may not be possible if bombarded by resistance sometimes associated with regular affirmation repetition.
Previously mentioned, the subconscious mind influences our behavior by keeping us safe in our comfort zones. Subliminal affirmations have the power of entering our subconscious minds without resistance because we cannot hear the affirmations and are blissfully unaware. This allows the affirmations to give instructions to our subconscious minds that are in alignment with what we desire to be our new comfort zone. Subliminal affirmations influence neuroplasticity by encouraging “change [to] our brain’s default mode of operation”(Ackerman). It does this through the power of repetition. When listening to subliminal affirmations most creators ensure to loop the affirmations for this reason to encourage the formation of new neural pathways.
Since our subconscious mind influences our habits and behaviors, when we update our neural connections by utilizing subliminal affirmations, we update our actions and change our perspectives on our external realities. We’ll begin to see opportunities that were once in our blind spots which in turn allows us to see our desires manifest like magic!

Summary
We have the power to change our realities by rewiring our brains. Through the use of subliminal affirmations we have the opportunity to bypass all resistance and limiting beliefs and command our subconscious minds to adopt new thought patterns and habits.
